The Wedding industry was shocked to learn that just two weeks prior to their 23rd wedding anniversary, “Vera Wang and Arthur Becker have mutually and amicably agreed to separate,” Wang’s company president, Mario Grauso told WWD. “They remain devoted parents to their two daughters Cecilia and Josephine.”
According to WWD, the couple married at The Pierre Hotel in 1989 when Wang was a designer for Ralph Lauren women’s accessories and at-home wear. Becker was a stock-broker. After having difficulty trying to find a wedding gown for her own wedding, she designed her dress and with the help of Arthur as they say, “the rest is history.”
There are many rumors of fighting in public, discord in the offices and even bitter jokes that he was “Mr. Vera Wang,” making light of his place in the marriage. Though Becker reportedly had his own business ventures, he was extremely involved in Wang’s company, which has expanded into makeup, fragrances, mass market, juniors, home goods and a lower-cost bridal line in recent years. However, a friend of the designer tells WWD that the couple “will not let this impact the running of the company. They have worked too hard to build it up.” It’s said that those that create use what happens in their life in their craft. Singers use breakups in their songs, designers choose colors to reflect where they are at that point in time. Let’s hope that the upcoming bridal season will bring new lightness and hope for Vera.
